Cleaning & Hygiene
Maintaining regular teeth cleanings is crucial for achieving optimal oral health. Our dedicated team is committed to helping you maintain a healthy and strong smile, while also identifying any potential areas of concern. For most patients, we recommend scheduling routine visits every six months, allowing our dental hygienist to effectively remove plaque, bacteria, and minor stains that may have accumulated since your last visit.
Alongside professional cleanings, maintaining a consistent at-home oral hygiene routine is equally important for the long-term health of your teeth and gums. We encourage you to brush your teeth at least twice a day for two minutes, using a toothpaste enriched with fluoride and a soft-bristled toothbrush. Additionally, incorporating daily flossing into your routine, preferably before bedtime, helps eliminate food particles, plaque, and bacteria that brushing alone may not effectively remove. By combining regular professional cleanings with diligent at-home care, you can ensure the ongoing health and vitality of your smile.
Digital X-Rays
Digital x-rays offer a fast, comfortable, and safe imaging solution. With their high-resolution quality, we can make precise diagnoses while minimizing your exposure to radiation compared to traditional film x-rays. Typically, patients receive one or two full sets of x-rays each year, providing us with comprehensive information about your oral health. However, in certain situations such as a dental emergency in Salt Lake City or the presence of potential oral health concerns, additional imaging may be necessary to ensure accurate diagnosis and effective treatment. Rest assured that our priority is your safety and well-being throughout the imaging process.
Fluoride Treatments
Fluoride treatments are quick, painless, and highly effective in preventing dental decay. Following your cleaning, we will apply a fluoride-rich varnish or gel to your teeth, allowing it to penetrate the enamel. After a few minutes, we will rinse it away. This process initiates remineralization, where fluoride attracts essential minerals such as calcium and phosphates to your teeth. As a result, your enamel is strengthened, restoring its hardness and enhancing your smile's resistance to acid attacks, ultimately reducing the risk of tooth decay.
Dental Sealants
Dental sealants are highly recommended for children, who are more prone to tooth decay. However, they are a beneficial option for patients of all ages seeking to safeguard their teeth against cavities. The application process is simple: a dental resin is applied to the molars, which are located at the back of the mouth and have uneven surfaces and grooves where plaque and bacteria can accumulate. The resin is then hardened using a UV light, creating a strong barrier between your teeth and the harmful elements like food, drinks, acid, and bacteria that contribute to decay. The best part is that dental sealants can last for an extended period, providing long-lasting protection for your teeth.
Periodontal Care
Gum disease is a common condition that, if left untreated, can lead to various complications, including tooth loss. The initial stage, known as gingivitis, can be reversed through deep cleanings and proper at-home oral hygiene. If you have gingivitis, maintaining regular cleanings, checkups, and diligent oral care will allow you to regain control over your oral health before it progresses to an irreversible stage.
For more advanced stages of periodontitis, more intensive and frequent treatment is necessary. We typically recommend deep cleaning sessions every three to four months, tailored to your specific needs. Although the effects of advanced periodontitis cannot be reversed, deep cleanings, scaling, and root planing can effectively halt the progression of gum disease and help preserve your overall oral well-being.
Oral Cancer Screenings
During your preventive care visit, an oral cancer screening is a standard part of our examination. Detecting oral cancer early greatly increases the chances of successful treatment and can potentially save lives.
Dr. Carter will thoroughly examine your gums, tongue, and the entire oral cavity for any signs of abnormalities such as lesions, lumps, or discolorations. If any suspicious findings are observed, we will refer you to a specialist for further analysis and evaluation. While oral cancer is relatively uncommon, it is crucial to maintain a diligent oral hygiene routine and regularly visit our Salt Lake City office for cleanings and checkups. By doing so, we can promptly identify any potential issues before they escalate into significant concerns.
Night Guards
Bruxism, the unconscious grinding and clenching of teeth, is a common issue experienced by many patients. Night guards provide an effective solution for bruxism, especially since this behavior typically occurs during sleep. These oral devices are designed to create a protective barrier between your teeth, preventing damage caused by grinding and clenching.
Depending on the severity of your bruxism, night guards can be fabricated using various materials. To ensure a proper fit, Dr. Carter will take impressions or digital scans of your teeth and gums. These impressions will be used to create a custom mold, which will be sent to the dental laboratory where your night guard will be crafted to precise specifications and measurements. By wearing a night guard, you can alleviate the tension in your jaw, reduce the occurrence of painful headaches, and minimize other uncomfortable or harmful side effects associated with grinding and clenching. This allows you to enjoy more restful sleep and maintain a healthy smile.
Sport Guards
Sports mouth guards, similar to night guards, are designed to be worn over the teeth but have a specific purpose of safeguarding your smile against oral injuries commonly encountered in high-impact sports. These custom-fitted guards offer protection against dental trauma resulting from collisions to the mouth, face, or head. If you engage in sports such as football, basketball, baseball, soccer, rugby, hockey, gymnastics, mountain biking, or other activities that pose a risk of injury due to falls, body contact, or flying objects, wearing a sports mouth guard is crucial for preserving your smile. Customized to fit your unique dental structure, these guards provide comfort and durability, allowing you to continue participating in the sports you love with confidence.
